Flemish Parliament wish stronger relation with Kurdistan
Ararat News –Publishing (ANP) –Roni ALASOR – 5 / 5 / 2009 – Brussels - The Belgian-Flemish Parliament approved unanimously a resolution concerning the relations between the Flanders and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. 79 members from all Flemish political parties requested the Flemish government to find opportunities for stronger relations and co-operation with Kurdistan on political, economic and cultural levels.
Burhan JAF, head of the Kurdistan Region to the EU welcomed this significant development between Flanders and Kurdistan. “The importance of this resolution is two-folded” Jaf said.
Mr. Jaf concluded that “On the one hand, it asks the Flemish Government to look at the particular position of the Kurdistan region. On the other hand, it sends a strong message to Flemish business institutions, such as the Flanders Investment and Trade (FIT), to consider investment in the Kurdistan Region. We hope that other regions take this example and start reconsidering their policy regarding the Kurdistan Region”.
The vote on the Kurdish resolution comes right after the visit of a delegation from the Flemish Parliament in the Kurdistan Region last month. Four Flemish Parliamentarians held a series of meetings with Ministers from the Kurdistan Regional Government and Members of the Kurdistan Parliament
