Ararat News –Publishing (ANP) –Roni ALASOR – 21 / 5 / 2009 – After five-years of intense parliamentarian work, the European Parliament is now at the end of its 2004-2009 mandate for a new period. The new election which is going to be held in June 2009, will be the biggest trans-national election in history. Nearly a halve billion (500.000.000) of EU citizen will be effected by votes of 375 million from 27 member countries to elect 736 members.
Until the elections of 7 June many of the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will work hard in their countries for the election campaign to keep their post. But many others will leave the European Parliament and will return to the national political life to use their experience in the local politics. One of the MEPs who will leave the European Parliament is Paolo Casaca, a active Portuguese Socialist.
Mr. Casaca has been ranked as third most active politician in the European Parliament by the project www.parlorama.eu. According the Parlorama project, he is the first of the Portuguese, the first of the Socialists and the third in a universe of the 920 MEPs that served totally of partially during the present term (2004 - 2009) for at least 90 days.
Currently, the Greek MEP from EPP, Marie Panayotopoulos-Cassiotou, holds the first place and the Spanish MEP of the Green Group, Raul Romeva i Rueda, holds the second place. The ranking which bring some discussions from different views is based in 2 factors - presence and activities, both of them measured by several criteria (attendance in plenary and in parliamentary committees, written questions, adopted reports, opinions, oral questions, written declarations proposed, question time and proposals for Resolutions).
"I was very honoured to have been classified by Parlorama.eu as the third most active Member of the European Parliament. This classification means the public recognition of the work I have been doing in the European Parliament, serving the European citizens that have elected me and giving voice to their problems and concerns" told Mr. Casaca to Ararat News.
But now after 10 years MEP career, the Portuguese Socialist will return to the national political life in his constituency in the Azores. Paolo Casaca is member of there Committees - on Budgetary Control, Budgets and Fisheries, and also member of the Delegation for relations with Iran. He worked very actively on foreign affairs issues and organised many interesting conferences, seminars and meetings.
