Several hundred Kurdish, Iranian and Belgian politicians and activists gathered in Brussels and asked to the EU to investigate the assignation of the former Iranian Kurdish leader, Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou.
Kurds ask EU to clarify terror-case in Vienna

Ararat News –Publishing (ANP) –  Roni Alasor / Fiona Lorin, Brussels – 14/ 7 / 2009 - Last Monday several hundred Kurdish, Iranian and Belgian politicians and activists gathered in Schuman place in the European quarter in Brussels and asked to the European Union and to the Austrian government to investigate the assignation of the former Iranian Kurdish leader, Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou. Former leader of Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), Dr. Ghassemlou and two of his comrades were killed in Vienna 20 years ago while holding peace negotiations with Iranian government. The demonstration in Brussels was organised by Kurdistan Democratic Party (Iran), a detached group from Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI).  

Among the politicians who met up in the Shuman Place was Bart STAES, Member of the European Parliament, Patrik Vankrunelsven, Belgian senator, Senator Elke Tindemans, Ex- Senator Lionel Vandenberghe, Matthias Diependaele, Member of the Flemish Parliament, Frieda Brepoels, Member of the European Parliament, Dr. Hedayat Matindaftari, Iranian Politic activiest & friend of Dr. Ghassemlou, Mrs Carol Pronhober, american journalist and writher, Mehdi Khambaba Tehrani, Iranian politician and friend of Dr. Ghassemlou, Dr. Hassan Shetavi and Mr. Mustafa Shalmashi, member of the political bureau of Kurdistan Democratic Party (Iran). The former Member of the European Parliament, Paulo Casaca from Portugal send a message to the protest action.


During the demonstration which continued to late evening, Mustafa Shalmashi from Kurdistan Democratic Party (Iran), held a speech and he reminded the facts of the assassination: “Dr. Ghassemlou was killed on the third phase of the peace negotiations between the Iranian authorities and the Iranian Kurds. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was member of the killing team”.

Mr. Shalmashi asked to the EU and the Austrian government to anew the case : “Since the assassination of Dr. Ghassemlou was committed in Europe, both EU and Austria, which is member country of EU, are responsible to clarify the facts of crime and bring the the killers to the justice”, added he.  

Kurdish sources told to ANP News that Iranian Kurds have intention to internationalize the case and bring the suspected killers to International court as the one in Hague.


Patrik Vankrunelsven, Belgian senator, promised to the demonstrators and to all the Kurds that he will take contact with the Belgian foreign ministry and he will ask the Belgian government to help for the case. He also mentioned that the Western diplomacy to Iran is very weak and often don't give positive results for human rights and democracy in Iran. He gave as example the last elections in Iran. Mr.Vankrunelsven promised to work for all the Kurds and his words were met with applause from the demonstrators.
