President Barroso re-elected by EP
Ararat News-Publishing (ANP) – Roni Alasor, Brussels – 16 / 9/ 2009 – European Parliament (EP) re-elected José Manuel Barroso as President of the European Commission for a new five-year. Mr. Barroso received 382 votes total of 718 MEPs. It was 219 MEPs, mainly Socialists, Green and Leftist against him, while 117 MEPs were abstentions.
President Barroso thanked specially to the MEPs European People’s Party (EPP) for the confidence shown in him, the political group which supported him.
However the second biggest political group in the EP, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) raised critics against Mr. Barroso for the support he got from the EU scepticals.
Leader of the Socialist Group (S&D) Martin Schulz said that "Barroso is a weak commission president because he took the votes of the anti-Europeans, who are the only group that voted unanimously for him. It's not a comfortable majority."
The only candidate Portugese politician José Manuel Barroso has been elected as
European Commission President in 2004 and now will keep his post until 2014.
