Armenians welcome Swedish Parliament for recognition of Genocide
Ararat News-Publishing (ANP) – Brussels, Fiona Lorin, Roni Alasor - 13 March 2010 - The Armenian General Benevolent Union in Europe (AGBU), the Armenian Assembly of Europe and the Euro-Armenian Federation welcomed the Swedish Parliament for acknowledging the Genocide committed by Turkey against the Armenians, Assyrians / Chaldeans / Syriacs and Pontic Greeks in 1915. Turkish authorities condemned the Swedish vote and recalled the Ambassador of Turkey in Sweden.
The vote of Swedish MP of Kurdish origin Gulan Avci was crucial in the last minute in adoption of Genocide resolution. Even though Liberal People’s Party opposed the motion, Miss Avci vote “Yes”.
"Sweden often strives to reconcile effectiveness and ethics in its relations with the world. We applaud it for its principled and constructive stance on the Genocide. The truth will set us all free." said Nicolas Tavitian, of AGBU Europe.
The Chairman of Armenian Assembly of Europe, Garo Hakopian expresses his warmest thanks to the Swedish Parliament which, “despite all pressure on the part of the Turkish authorities and other obstacles, taking into consideration the reality of historical evidence and the principle that justice is the ultimate value, has recognized the genocide against the Armenians and other peoples, which was committed by Turkey in 1915”.
“We send our greetings to the Assyrians-Chaldeans and Pontic Greeks who had the same sad destiny as the Armenians victims of the Genocide planned by the Turkish state. We are congratulating the Swedish parliament for their courage to face the pressure of the Turkish lobby”, declared Hilda Tchoboian, President of the Euro-Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy.
The Parliament of Sweden adopted the resolution by a vote of 131 to 130 on Thursday 11 March. It was mainly supported by the Social Democratic, Green and Left. In response, Turkey withdrew its Ambassador and cancelled Prime Minister Erdogan’s scheduled visit.
