Commissioner King: EU to strengthen security cooperation

by Roni Alasor

Brussels,  Sep 2017 - Middle East Diplomatic (MED) - In a debate in the European Parliament, EU Security Commissioner Sir Julian King called for more engagement and strengthen cooperation between EU Member states in the field of security.

Commissioner King presented to the Members of the European Parliament in the Civil Liberties Committee “Comprehensive Security Assessment”, which reviews the Union’s policies in the field of internal security in the last 15 years.

"The EU is reducing the space where terrorists can operate: making it harder for them to travel, to train, to get money, weapons and explosives. We have made our external borders more secure, improved our exchange of information about terrorists and other criminals, and stepped up our work with internet companies and local communities to tackle radicalisation. But there remains more to do, as recent attacks have again tragically underlined. Our citizens look to us to protect and strengthen their security; working together we need to deliver on the commitments we`ve made”, said Commissioner King.

Claude Moraes (S&D, UK), Chair of Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee, welcomed the conclusion of the European Commission and underlined that “the Parliament will continue to engage with both the Commission and the Council to ensure that particular attention is given to those instruments that have not performed as expected, and that the assessment’s findings are acted upon”, so the security of the European citizens is assured.
